The Review

"River of Fire" is how Kai Christiansen describes the impression left by the Cavatina Duo’s project after watching Latcho Drom—a film about the Romani people and their music. “It deeply moved me, and two images from the film immediately came to mind: water and fire.”
As Eugenia Moliner and Denis Azabagić told us last month in this magazine, “we celebrate the richness and diversity of Romani music; this project is deeply personal because it speaks to universal stories—migration, resilience, and the search for a place to belong.”
This music pulses with the power of both water and fire, with a rhythmic heartbeat that surges forward, gaining strength as the album progresses.
Romani Songs by Stacy Garrop is a cycle that captures the raw essence of Romani folk melodies, with astonishing stylistic shifts. In Contos Ciganos, Sérgio Assad uses the flute--brilliantly played by Spanish flutist Eugenia Moliner—as the narrator of a journey through distant lands, embodying the music of each place along the way. Raga Ibriama by Atanas Ourkouzounov, featuring Azabagić’s spellbinding guitar and a flute that seems to float, evokes the sounds of the Balkans.
The album is rounded out by Three Artisans by Matthew Dunne and Four Scenes by Clarice Assad, expanding the sonic possibilities of a six-instrument ensemble while exploring the emotions of immigration—highlighted by the stunning Um Sonho.
These world-premiere recordings offer thrilling compositions and performances.

Cavatina Duo
